The construction industry is one the most dangerous fields to work in. The fact is, many construction workers are placed to work on sites that are risky and sometimes compromising to their safety. One of the leading causes of construction worker injuries and deaths are falls. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) reported that in 2016, out of the 991 deaths that were reported in the construction industry, 384 were on account of a fall. Sadly, one construction worker in Mississippi is now faced with some unfortunate circumstances after he fell at a construction site.
WDAM was one of the news sources that reported on the story, providing some insight as to how this construction accident occurred. It was Saturday, June 2nd when Willie Castaing was working on at the construction site of the new Patio 44 restaurant in Gulfport. He had been on a lift working to install trusses and rafters when the structure came crashing down, causing him to fall nearly 15 feet.
Ron Savell, who is the owner of Patio 44, believes that the incident occurred after a gust of wind caused one of the trusses to fall, which then created a domino effect with the rest. Although Castaing isn’t able to recall all of the details that led up the incident just yet, his wife Amy Castaing says she has been showing him photos in an effort to help him remember something more regarding the accident.
Castaing Suffered Multiple Injures from the Fall and Is Expected to Remain Hospitalized for at Least a Month
After the fall, Willie was transported to an area hospital where doctors informed him that he will likely remain hospitalized for at least a month. He had suffered multiple fractures in his legs, a broken elbow as well as three discs in his back and has already undergone two surgeries since the accident occurred. His wife says that although he is in rough shape, he survived the accident and is “hopeful he will make a full recovery.” She also told the source that she is “prepared to stand beside her husband” while he works to get better.
The news source highlighted that while Willie works toward recovery, the construction will continue at Patio 44 and the restaurant is expected to open sometime in early October.
