Rebecca Tafaro Boyer was headed back to work after spending the first three months with her newborn son on maternity leave. Boyer works as a nurse in Memphis and while it is always hard to leave your new baby to go back to work, duty calls. Since Boyer couldn’t spend her days any longer taking care of and enjoying her son, her husband, David Boyer, was given the responsibility. But, Boyer was sure to remind her husband that she wanted hourly updates and recaps on how their 3-month-old son William was handling his first day away from his mother.”
David Boyer started by sending his wife a photo of William in his car seat when they went to Walgreens. When Rebecca saw the photo, she instantly went into mommy mode and told her husband that “the straps were too loose and the chest clip was way too low.” Despite the fact that she knew she sounded like a “nagging wife,” she was only concerned with their son’s safety. She told Today she was sure her husband laughed off the comment, “rolled his eyes,” and then tightened and adjusted the car seat straps and clip.”
After about 15 minutes passed, Boyer then received a call from her husband who told her they had been involved in a car wreck. Although the two were fine, the couple’s car was totaled. Apparently, Boyer’s husband was less than three miles from their home with his son when he collided into a woman’s SUV who had pulled into traffic to make a left turn. Unfortunately, he didn’t have enough time to stop to avoid the crash as he had been traveling at about 50 mph.
Although Boyer’s husband suffered a broken foot in three places and dislocated three toes, her son managed to sleep through the entire accident. Boyer now attributes her son surviving the crash without an injury, or waking up, to him being strapped into his car seat correctly. Boyer took to Facebook to share how important it is for babies and toddlers to be properly restrained in their seats when riding in the car. Boyer said, “My precious little bundle of joy was so well restrained in his car seat THAT HE DIDN’T EVEN WAKE UP. Even with the impact of the two cars, William only received a minor jolt- so insignificant that he was able to continue on with his nap, and then spend the next two hours flirting with nurses in the Le Bonheur ED.”
The new mother also went on to tell Today that she was so thankful that her husband took the extra time to make the necessary adjustments to their son’s car seat as the outcome could have been much different had he not done so. And after her Facebook post went viral, the company where Boyer purchased the car seat from reached out to her and offered to provide her with a new seat. If you weren’t aware, once a car seat is involved in a wreck, it cannot be used any longer. But, because Boyer had so much faith in the seat the first time as it did save her son, she had already purchased another seat but asked that the company donate the new one to the Forrest Spence Fund.
While we all know how important it is to put our child in the proper safety restraint seat when they are younger, we also have to be cognizant of the fact that there is a right way to buckle them up. If a child is put into a seat with straps that aren’t tight enough or a buckle that is too low, the chances of them sustaining an injury increase in the event of an accident as the seat is not being used in the proper manner.
