There are several different cities and communities in Lamar County, Mississippi. However, the city of Purvis is the county seat of Lamar County. Purvis was incorporated in 1888, and since that time, its citizens have been very active in all branches of the United States military.
The City of Lumberton is located on the southern edge of Lamar County with a population of more than 2,000, as of the 2000 census. Lumberton is the hometown of the Mississippi’s longest serving former Secretary of State, Heber Austin Ladner. At the opposite end, the Town of Sumrall sits on the northern edge of Lamar County with a population of over 1,000, as of the 2000 census.
Lamar County is also home to the community of Baxterville. Baxterville is located in the southwestern portion of Lamar County along Mississippi Highway 13. The community of Oloh is located in the northwestern portion of Lamar County and is near Highway 98.
